Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists and other healthcare providers to relieve pain and improve motion. Though similar to acupuncture (same needles are used), it is considered a different service. Acupuncture is a form of Eastern Medicine, performed by a licensed Acupuncturist. Dry needling is considered a part of Western Medicine, and at Headstrong PT & Wellness, it is performed by our licensed physical therapist. Our physical therapist earned her certification through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy, which involved 60 total hours of hands-on learning, as well as passing a written and practical exam.
The needle itself is solid (not hollow like a needle used for injecting), hence its name: “dry” needling. The width and length vary depending on the tissue: width 0.18-0.25mm, length 30-60mm. For reference, a pencil eraser is ~5mm wide.
Often times the needle is inserted into a trigger point (most tender “knot” within the muscle belly) to decrease tightness and increase mobility. NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) can be used simultaneously to amplify the affects of the needle. Onset of relief varies from immediately to 24 hours, and each individual reacts differently. Our physical therapist uses dry needling as a tool to decrease pain and improve movement.
